Sunny War // Marielle Allschwang Trio // Pay Dirt

We’re really excited to get an intimate trio of Marielle, Adam, and Nathaniel on upright bass to warmly welcome Sunny War to The Cactus Club.

From Sunny War’s bio: “…she may be a Robert Johnson with a shot of Bad Brains, but even this description falls short. The only way to really know Sunny is to immerse oneself in the music. Easy enough, right?”

Rise & Thrive Concert Fundraiser and **EP Release** w/ special guests Rosenau/Mueller, Erin Wolf.

I had the honor of being the inaugural artist in residence for Rise & Thrive, a free survivor empowerment service offered by LOTUS Legal Clinic, a Milwaukee-based nonprofit organization that serves survivors of sexual violence and human trafficking, both sex and labor. Valuing a wholistic approach to empowering survivors, LOTUS Legal has developed two sister art programs, Untold Stories and Rise & Thrive, that aim to engage, enrich, and connect survivors through literary art and unique collaborations with professional artists. As a resident artist for Rise & Thrive, I collaborated with four survivor-writers who created poems that explore their experiences of joy, resilience, and renewal in the aftermath of sexual trauma. In summer 2021, I began to work with the Rise & Thrive participants—Jeanne, Pita, Donna, and Hannah—who are prolific artists in their own right. From intimate conversations and close readings, I created one song for each of them in response to/ inspired by their poetry, implementing their words as lyrics, and composing melodies and arrangements that I thought could hold and honor those words and voices. The Visitations joined me, and we recorded “Somewhere to Swim".

On May 13th we will release the album—which will be available digitally on May 10th, with preorders for vinyl available as well—at a benefit showcase for Rise & Thrive and LOTUS Legal Clinic. Good friends and incredible musicians Chris Rosenau and Jon Mueller will join us as special guests to play a set, and Erin Wolf (Hello Death, Group of the Altos) will also join us on songs new & not-so-new.

We are so excited to finally cross paths with Haley Fohr / Circuit Des Yeux. We’ve been a fan of her music for awhile, ever since hearing her sing on Mind Over Mirrors recordings when Marielle and Nathaniel collaborated with Jaime Fennelly (founder of Mind Over Mirrors) in Jon Mueller’s Death Blues: Ensemble roughly six years ago, It will be nice to close the ‘circuit’ (sorry) and meet a friend of good friends, whose work we respect, admire, and enjoy greatly.

Sessa (Brazil) + Marielle Allschwang & The Visitations - All-Ages

SESSA (SAO PAULO, BRAZIL )

Grandeza is the brilliant debut album of Brazil-born artist Sessa. A long-time fixture of both the American and Brazilian music scenes, known for collaborating with NY guitar legend Yonatan Gat, and his co-founding of São Paulo psych-funk combo Garotas Suecas, Sessa now shares his own musical vision of “super sick modern Brazilian vibes … touching on cosmic jazz, psych, and tropicália,” as put by music-connoisseurs at Light in the Attic.

His songs are sung in Portuguese, with visceral, sexual lyrics in the vain of Caetano Veloso and melodic flourishes not unlike those of Tom Jobim. However, the music gets a deliberate minimalist treatment rarely found in contemporary Brazilian music, more reminiscent of the bareness of Leonard Cohen.

Sessa’s concerts are already stuff of legend in Brazil, as he takes the stage accompanied solely by female backing choir and Afro-Brazilian percussion. While the songs often deal with subjects such as the sensual body and spiritual transcendence, the music points to new, more subtle directions for World pop music in 2019 – a deep, minimalist, almost insinuated use of the endlessly rich textures and rhythms that define the songwriting history of Brazil, which Sessa now joins as one of the most promising new voices.

“ A beautiful and highly recommended record.”- Aquarium Drunkard

“Brazilian Folk Bliss” – Afropop

“On this intoxicating LP, the hushed classic sound of Tropicália gets a gentle dusting of psychedelia” – Bandcamp

“Super sick modern Brazilian vibes in line with the best of Tom Jobim, Caetano Veloso, and Arthur Verocai while touching on cosmic jazz, psych, and tropicália. A gorgeous, captivating record through and through.” – Light in the Attic

ABOUT PRECESSION OF A DAY: THE WORLD OF MARY NOHL:

Milwaukee-based songwriter and performer Marielle Allschwang, whose work has been called “aurally-enthralling and emotionally-arresting,” enlists The Visitations to present Precession of a Day: The World of Mary Nohl—a song cycle and multimedia performance exploring the unconventional life and artist-built environment of Mary Nohl (1914-2001). Utilizing a variety of musical styles and approaches—informed by the pastoral symphonies and mountain folk music of Allschwang's Germanic and Filipino roots, commingled with Handel’s arias, highlife, metal, and new wave—alongside a film composed from intimate footage in and around Nohl’s home on the shore of Lake Michigan—Allschwang mines her early childhood encounters with and subsequent return to Nohl’s environment to explore the biographical, visual, and social aspects of Nohl’s multifaceted life, work, and legacy.

For half a century, Mary Nohl tirelessly transformed her home, inside and out, into an artist-built environment on the shores of Lake Michigan. Her radical rootedness to place, her distinct visual language, staggering range of media, and autonomy became infamous. Locals often called her the “Witch of Fox Point”— to which she responded with poignant humor, addressing her friends with “Greetings & Salutations & Boo” in mimeographed newsletters. Despite holding a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and owning her own pottery shop in Milwaukee, Nohl remains pegged as an “outsider.” Nohl’s marginalization and its implications are as relevant today as it was in the 1940s, when she dared to travel the world, mix cement in her bathtub, create graphic novels, and run a business, all on her own. Allschwang and her band take a deep dive into a little-known and astoundingly prolific, complicated artist deserving much more renown.

Precession is produced by David Ravel, former Artistic Director of Alverno Presents in Milwaukee, WI and producer of such critically acclaimed works as Bellowing Sun (Mind Over Mirrors) and American Klassiks (Klassik).

HEAR PRECESSION OF A DAY

Chris Rosenau is a guitar player and founding member of seminal instrumental post-rock band Pele, American music ensemble Collections of Colonies of Bees, and Indie rock band Volcano Choir with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon. He has performed for over 20 years with these bands throughout North America, Europe, and Japan. His approach to the guitar takes the roots of Americana filtered through modern composition and technology. Using multiple amps and a palette of looping effects, he's crafted a unique style that's as uplifting and melodic as it is bold and adventurous.

Throughout his music career, he has also written and performed rare solo compositions. This performance at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis opening for Marielle Allschwang and the Visitations' "Precession of a Day: The World of Mary Nohl" is no exception. Chris will be preparing a solo performance specific to the spirit of the evening, intended to meld with and set the stage for MATV's "Precession".

NADAH EL SHAZLY

(CAIRO, EGYPT)

Nadah El Shazly is an experimental Egyptian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. Her work both radically reinvents the early 20th century popular music of her homeland and boldly explores new sonic frontiers. Coming up performing Misfits covers and jazz standards in the Cairo underground, she has expounded on her DIY roots with a droning, cerebral, highly poetic sound that has positioned the artist at the center of the booming North African avant-garde. Her acclaimed debut album, 2017’s "Ahwar," was written and recorded by El Shazly on a computer between Egypt and Montreal. Swirling, lavish instrumentation was later arranged, working in collaboration with renowned figures from the improv/contemporary classical scene - Maurice Louca and Sam Shalabi (mem. The Dwarfs of East Agouza, Land of Kush). The album placed on many year-end lists, including The Wire magazine's best of 2017.

Frances Cone
https://www.francesconemusic.com

FRANCES CONE is Christina Cone, Andrew Doherty and Aaron Hamel. The Nashville based soulful indie-pop band, fronted by Christina Cone, is named after Christina's father and great-grandfather, both musicians themselves in South Carolina and both born on September 11th. The band has been praised for their compelling, emotional live show and captivating recordings. In 2016, Frances Cone released, "Arizona," the first single from their forthcoming full-length album which is set to release in early 2019. Stereogum praised Arizona for Cones melodic vocals, rich harmonies, and an electrifying guitar sound." Written about her brother, filmmaker Stephen Cone, "Arizona's" reach has extended far and wide at 10 million streams on Spotify.

Most recently, NPR's All Songs Considered premiered "Unraveling" a timely and cathartic song about the "ways life conspires to overwhelm". It solidifies the band's commitment to a sound creating a "sweet slow burn in which songs build gradually and carefully into something truly grand. "The gorgeous "Unraveling" really gets at what works about Frances Cone's music: Each cooed "ooooh" is in the exact right place, weaving together to form a warm and hypnotic tapestry."
